HMS Bristol

HMS

At Easter, cadets of South yorks and humber District, to which we belong, usually visit HMS Bristol, a sea cadet training ship in Portsmouth. The cadets spend the week carrying out their chosen activity of Sailing, powerboating, First aid, Writer/Stores, Communications and many other subjects. The crew in the picture below had problems due to force 8 winds and had to reef their sails.:

Sailing

To gain an RYA Level 2 Sailing qualification, the cadets also have to do their capsize drill. This involves purposely capsizing the boat and then the crew have to try to bring it upright again. This is done by one person laying in the boat while the other uses the Jib sheet to pull the boat upright, as perfectly demonstrated by one of the senior cadets below:

Capsize

The power boaters have an equally fun time learning how to manoeuvre up to a bouy and control speed and direction as well as learning the rule of the road. The picture shows one cadets attempting to control the boat, the staff normally make brilliant back seat drivers here!

Powerboating

At the end of the week the cadets are asked to perform a S.O.D.S.(Ships Operatic Drama Society) opera, which involves teams of cadets putting on a short sketch, song or something along those lines. These weeks are usually enjoyed by all cadets and staff.
